A senior dental student in at the University of Louisville Dental School in Louisville, KY contacted me through the Six-Step Screening website.
“I am amazed by your story and I think you’re an inspiration for everybody, providing hope out of hardship. I am the President of the American Student Dental Association at U of L. I’ve been showing your YouTube videos to classmates and my family, telling them that I want to bring you in to speak this year. You’re awesome!”
“It would be a valuable experience for students to hear about your experience (the patient’s perspective). We are taught in our Oral Pathology course, ‘No significant improvement has been made in the early diagnosis of oral/pharyngeal cancer in the last 25 years’ and ‘prognosis is generally poor because most patients present in Stage III or IV.’ This is a very real problem. Since the majority of students haven’t seen oral cancer in the clinic nor have they met/interacted with a oral cancer patient, I think it would be an invaluable experience. I’m going to work on securing some funding sources and see if we can bring you to speak at U of L for our 400 dental students soon!”
Lucky for them, John Meis of Mortenson Family Dental in Louisville KY arranged for me to speak at an event for his employees – so his wish came true. Persistence pays off! I’ll be speaking at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry on Thursday October 11, 2012 at 12 noon.
