Trivia Question #1
Are dentists required to have REGULAR continuing education in early detection of oral cancer?
The answer is NO.
Each state mandates the requirements for their dentists. New York State is the only state that has recently required dental professionals to take one 2-hour course over the next two years on early detection of oral cancer. Dentists are only required to have continuing education in CPR and infectious disease control.
Oral Cancer is dentistry’s deadliest disease, yet dental professionals are NOT required to take Continuing Education courses in recognizing the early signs.
What does that mean for you and me? Be your own advocate for your health. Visit a dental practice that is proud they offer thorough oral cancer screenings, and that they have had some education in early detection. Good luck!
